If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a “Senior Engineer- Fuel Cycle & Process Modelling”. This is what you need to know:

Location: Knoxville (TN), Oxford (United Kingdom)

Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits

Contract: Permanent, full time

Reporting to: Director, Nuclear & Fuel Cycle Engineering

Your role in the mission:

Type One Energy is seeking a highly experienced and technically strong Senior Engineer- Fuel Cycle & Process Modelling to drive the development, integration, and validation of advanced modeling frameworks for the fusion fuel cycle. This role is critical to shaping the architecture and performance of our Infinity 2 stellarator reactor and future commercial systems.

The successful candidate will develop a team of modelers and analysts, oversee the development of system-level and subsystem-level models, and ensure alignment with design, safety, and operational requirements. The role requires deep expertise in fuel cycle physics, systems engineering, and computational modeling, as well as the ability to guide cross-functional collaboration across engineering, physics, and operations teams.

In addition to technical leadership, you will be responsible for establishing robust modeling frameworks that integrate multiple simulation tools and ensure version control and traceability of key data. The role will embed experimental and R&D data into modeling workflows to enable continuous design iteration and performance improvement. A critical responsibility will be to ensure comprehensive digital accounting of tritium across the fusion plant, supporting the development of a digital twin that accurately reflects fuel cycle behavior and supports operational planning, safety analysis, and regulatory compliance.

  • Serve as the responsible officer for a fuel cycle subsystem, ensuring clear development pathways and efficient, streamlined system designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, design, and implement robust fuel cycle models and address key requirements for the modelling development team.
  • Conduct comprehensive process simulations and modelling to assess the efficiency, feasibility, and safety of your responsible subsystem.
  • Apply modelling expertise to simulate the behavior of key subsystems and support iterative refinement of the fuel cycle architecture.
  • Develop a comprehensive roadmap for modeling tool development, outlining the timeline, technical requirements, funding needs, and resource allocations necessary to support the growth and integration of modeling capabilities across the fuel cycle program.
  • Analyze data and perform in-depth research to identify areas for process improvement and optimization, aiming for enhanced efficiency and tritium control for all subsystems.
  • Prepare technical reports, mass and energy balances, scopes of work, presentations, and publications to disseminate research/technology development findings and contribute to the scientific community.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians to foster a collaborative environment and integrate tritium considerations into product development.
  • Collaborate with external partners, including academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners, to explore potential collaborations and stay at the forefront of fusion technologies.
  • Assist with the preparation of protocols and procedures for the safe handling of tritium for experiments pertaining to your subsystem.
  • Be accountable for the quality and accuracy of work.
  • Provide transparent and realistic feedback on timelines, resource requirements, and issues to enable the timeline completion of assigned duties.

What you’ll need:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
    · Proven track record in modeling complex nuclear or chemical systems, ideally within the fusion or advanced fission domain.
    · Deep understanding of tritium and hydrogen isotope behavior, fuel cycle dynamics, and reactor systems integration.
    · Proficiency in modeling tools such as Aspen Plus, COMSOL, FESTIM, TMAP, MATLAB, or Python-based platforms.
    · Experience leading technical teams and managing multi-disciplinary modeling efforts.
    · Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on model accuracy, validation, and decision support.
    · Familiarity with nuclear safety standards, regulatory frameworks, and design control processes.
    · Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
