About the role:

Fermilab’s Accelerator Division (AD) Beams Instrumentation (BI) Department is seeking a Beams Instrumentation Mechanical Assembly Technician. The BI Mechanical Assembly Technician will support the preparation, alignment, and functional testing of PIP-II Beam Profile Monitor (BProM) system as part of a multi-year effort to build and qualify approximately 30 units. This person will perform hands-on fabrications, assembly, subcomponent alignment, testing support, and documentation while working closely with engineering and technical teams to ensure consistent, high-quality builds.

What your day-to-day as a Beams Instrumentation Mechanical Assembly Technician at Fermilab will look like:

  • Fabricate, assemble, set up, operate, test, repair, and modify mechanical equipment, assemblies, and beam profile monitor (BProM) components using engineering drawings diagrams, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Perform mechanical assembly and setup of BProM components – including AES/TWS elements-following established procedures and build standards.
  • Conduct fine mechanical align of pickups and assembles using approved tools and precision alignment techniques.
  • Support functional testing of BProM pickups including test preparations, fixture setup, mechanical checks, and assistance with data collection.
  • Assist with subsystem testing, calibration preparation, and system readiness activities for BProM instruments.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on tools, fixtures, and specialized mechanical assembly equipment, support troubleshooting and mechanical issue resolution.
  • Provide moderately complex technical support and maintenance for mechanical instruments and assemblies; troubleshoot and perform repairs when required.
  • Document assembly steps, measurements, configuration details, test results, and alignment data in logbooks or electronic systems; write and update procedures as needed.
  • Prepare technical data, reports, and safety documentation using standard software tools.
  • Support integration, alignment confirmation, fit checks, and installation preparations in coordination with engineering, alignment, vacuum, and controls teams.
  • Maintain inventories of mechanical parts, hardware, materials, and BProM-related build components; procure small parts and supplies when needed.
  • Follow all ES&H procedures, conduct periodic safety checks, and support hazard analyses, environmental surveys, waste handling, and radiological-related tasks as required.
  • Respond to operational and emergency needs, including off-hour call-in support when necessary.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of mechanical and BProM assembly methods, tooling, workflow, and documentation.
  • Assist in the implementation, improvement, and occasional design of mechanical systems and assemblies; ensure high quality in all job aspects.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced technicians and serve as shift supervisor when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Competencies and Attributes for Success:

  • High School degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 3+ years of extensive related experience or up to 1 year of Department of Energy laboratory experience.
